As a podcaster, I recently had the privilege of conversing with Dr. Shakardokht Jafari, a distinguished medical physicist and now a celebrated author. Her memoir, “Shakar: A Woman’s Journey from Afghanistan,” articulates her journey of resilience and innovation in an eloquent narrative. Dr. Jafari’s groundbreaking medical invention – reusable silica glass beads that measure radiation within the human body, which could allow for more targetted cancer treatment – is a testament to human intelligence’s boundless potential, a quality mirrored in our age, now dominated by the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Ironically, while the world is fervently nurturing and harnessing human and artificial intelligence, the Taliban, are actively striving to quash the blossoming of intellect and societal progress. Their rule in Afghanistan threatens to reverse the hard-won advancements of the past two decades, casting a jarring, polarizing shadow across the landscape of intellectual progress and development.
This article explores the sharp contrast between the world’s collective pursuit of human and superhuman intelligence and the Taliban’s calculated efforts to extinguish any semblance of intellectual pursuit within Afghanistan and potentially the region. It underscores the quintessential value of knowledge, education, and intellect in our rapidly evolving global society.
What is intelligence?
In his thought-provoking book, “Superintelligence,” philosopher Nick Bostrom propounds a potent vision of the human intellect’s future as we inch closer to realizing cognitive enhancement and AI feats that could potentially dwarf our current capacities. Bostrom’s seminal work, steeped in cautionary foresight and visionary insight, opens the door to a broader discourse on human intelligence’s intrinsic value in the contemporary world. Essentially, intelligence is the torchbearer of human capability, facilitating a gamut of achievements from artistic creativity to scientific discovery. Intelligence paves the path for societal growth, fostering critical thinking, innovative problem-solving, and emotional intelligence that lend resilience to the fabric of societies.
When nurtured and cultivated, human intelligence can create sustainable futures by generating solutions for pressing global issues, from climate change to public health crises. It champions democratic values, fostering an informed citizenship, and promoting dialogue and participation. Intelligence enhances the overall quality of life, driving technological advancements, healthcare innovations, and educational breakthroughs. Thus, the importance of human intelligence in the present era is not merely a matter of academic debate but a critical determinant of our global society’s trajectory.
Human intelligence and the role of education
When nurtured and encouraged, human intelligence can lead to extraordinary feats of innovation, as manifested by Shakardokht Jafari’s story. Her invention has the potential to revolutionize radiation cancer treatment around the world because her strings of silica glass beads will allow medical personnel to measure directly the radiation doses received at a tumour. This ingenious innovation enhances patient care by measuring the radiation dose received by the tumour to see if it actually matches the dose in the patient treatment plan. And it’s not just cancer – those beads could possibly be used by anything that uses radiation. It is a testament to the transformative power of intelligence in bettering the human condition.
Indeed, the annals of history are resplendent with instances where intelligence has catalyzed groundbreaking inventions, reshaping the trajectory of the world. Take, for example, the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, Thomas Edison’s patent of his incandescent light bulb, or Tim Berners-Lee’s invention of the World Wide Web. These revolutionary innovations can be traced back to the fount of human intelligence, imbued with knowledge and skills through education.
It also emphasizes the pivotal role of education as a tool to unlock the boundless potential of the human intellect, underscoring the urgent need to cultivate and safeguard it against forces of ignorance and regression.
Undermining intelligence: The Taliban’s approach
As we revel in the accomplishments that human intelligence can engender when paired with education, a chilling contrast emerges in Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban. Here, intelligence is devalued and systematically stifled. This extremist group has cast a pall of regression, curtailing intellectual growth, and eroding decades of progress.
Reports of closed schools, especially for girls, and restricted access to higher education paint a grim picture of intellectual oppression. This has not only created a void in human cognitive, social, economic, and artistic development but has also led to a gross infringement of basic human rights. By imposing stringent censorship and curbing the freedom of thought, the Taliban has significantly compromised the socio-economic trajectory of the country and region.
This worrisome scenario starkly contrasts the globally acknowledged importance of intellectual growth. Moreover, it poses a disturbing paradox: while most of the world is engaged in harnessing the power of human and artificial intelligence, the Taliban is actively dismantling the intellectual foundation of a nation.
Domino effect: The global ramifications
The suppression of knowledge and intellectual growth by the Taliban has far-reaching repercussions for Afghanistan’s population and the broader spectrum of global development and stability. By suppressing the pursuit of knowledge, the Taliban effectively incapacitates a generation from contributing meaningfully to the nation’s growth.
This environment of intellectual deprivation impacts every facet of Afghan society. It compromises healthcare delivery, hinders technological progress, and impedes economic growth. More critically, it fosters a populace devoid of critical thinking and susceptible to manipulation, thereby nurturing a vicious cycle of ignorance and extremism.
The repercussions are not confined within Afghanistan’s borders. They disrupt the regional balance, as a nation bereft of progress potentially becomes a hotbed of socio-political instability and extremism, which could ripple across the world. Moreover, the world loses out on the untapped potential of Afghan minds that could have otherwise contributed to the global intellectual landscape.
The war of the Taliban against human intellect and intellectual progress is not just a concern affecting Afghanistan but a global concern that warrants immediate attention.
Charting the path to intellectual emancipation
Amidst the disheartening circumstances, it’s essential to illuminate potential pathways to intellectual emancipation. The international community can play a crucial role in advocating for education and intellectual freedom in oppressed societies such as Afghanistan. Support can be manifested through policy pressure, the provision of financial aid, and the fostering of cross-cultural educational programs that circumvent traditional barriers.
In this digitized era, technology, particularly AI, can serve as an invaluable ally in promoting intelligence and learning. With its adaptability and scalability, AI can deliver personalized, quality education directly to learners, unhindered by geographical or sociopolitical constraints. Innovations like AI-powered remote learning platforms and language learning apps can help disseminate knowledge widely, mitigating some intellectual deprivation induced by oppressive regimes such as the Taliban.
Though these initiatives will come with their own challenges, they could stimulate intellectual awakening within oppressed societies, empowering individuals to stand against the forces that seek to confine their intellect. While these are only initial steps in a long journey towards intellectual liberation, they underline the importance of collective global effort in countering anti-intellectualism.
“Artificial intelligence will reach human levels by around 2029. Follow that out further to, say, 2045, we will have multiplied the intelligence, the human biological machine intelligence of our civilization a billion-fold.” – Ray Kurzweil
The staggering forecast of Ray Kurzweil, an American futurist and Google’s director of engineering, underscores the vital role that human and artificial intelligence will play in shaping our collective future.
Yet, the oppressive policies of the Taliban cast a shadow on this bright horizon. Their regressive regime threatens to extinguish the sparks of intellect, reinforcing ignorance, and hindering progress. Such forces starkly contrast the global trend towards fostering intelligence and advancing civilization.
Finally, Shakardokht Jafari’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the potential that can be realized when intelligence is nurtured, not stifled. It calls for the global community to rally against forces that seek to suppress intellect and safeguard the immense potential that lies in our collective intelligence. It implores us to take a stance against ignorance in all its forms, champion the cause of intellectual freedom, and assert the inviolable sanctity of human intelligence in shaping our collective destiny and civilization.
