A former mujahedeen commander named Abdul Aziz was shot dead in Dare Zendan village in Samangan province. He was killed while returning home after praying on Friday night, a family member said on condition of anonymity.

Abdul Aziz’s niece, Beheshta, 34, confirmed her uncle’s death to Zan Times and said armed men shot him in the neck near his house. She says her uncle was a father of nine children.
Abdul Aziz was commander of a military faction that had fought against the Taliban in the past, said the sources. Even though no one has taken responsibility for this murder, the Taliban have carried out similar assassinations aimed at security forces of the previous administration or militants opposed to the Taliban.
