Local sources in Faryab province say that a 40-year-old woman hanged herself in Andkhoi district on Saturday.

“This woman’s name is Bibi Aisha, she was about 40 years old. At around 5 am, today, she hanged herself from the fan in her room with a rope and ended her life,” a source at Maimana central hospital told Zan Times.

According to the source, there were still rope marks apparent on her neck when she was brought to the hospital.

A resident of the district says that Bibi Aisha had seven children, the youngest of which is a four-month-old girl.

So far, the motive of this woman’s suicide is not clear.

Hamidullah Mubariz, the spokesperson of the Taliban police in Faryab, confirmed the woman’s death, saying that Bibi Aisha’s body was taken to the hospital by her family.

Since the Taliban came to power, the cases of female suicides have increased in the country. In July, the issue was raised at the UN Human Rights Council, which reported that “the situation for women is so desperate in Afghanistan that they are committing suicide at a rate of one or two every day.”
