Kunduz locals tell Zan Times that a 20-year-old youth hanged himself after his tailoring shop was robbed. He died on Thursday, November 10.

“The young man’s name was Mohiuddin, and he hanged himself today in his shop in the intersection of Mall Bazar, located in the Police District 3 of Kunduz city,” says a source, who requested anonymity.

Another source, who also asked not to be identified, tells Zan Times that Mohiuddin’s shop had been robbed on Tuesday, and he lost goods worth more than 100,000 afghanis.  “When his customers asked for their clothes, he did not have the money and committed suicide,” he adds.

Experts say that Afghanistan’s suicide rate has increased after the Taliban regained power, which resulted in a collapse in the nation’s economy and soaring poverty and unemployment rates. As international aid dried up, the limited social safety net also collapsed, putting even more strain on families, especially when confronted with unexpected financial problems, such as losing work, robberies, or demands to pay new taxes by the Taliban.
