A young woman hanged herself using a rope in her bedroom on the morning of Thursday, November 3, in Ghor province.

Sources, including a neighbour, tell Zan Times that her name was Hanifa and she was a resident of Lal Sar Jangal district.

They say that Hanifa’s boyfriend had deceived her with the promise of marriage. Though they had sex, he did not marry her. “Her boyfriend had sex with her by deception and did not marry her,” one of them tells Zan Times.

They both recount that Hanifa died of suicide after he married another girl.

Premarital sex is unacceptable in traditional Afghan culture.

For young women in Afghanistan, life in the country is increasingly grim. In the past year, the number of suicides in Afghanistan have increased, especially among women as the Taliban have imposed ever-more stringent restrictions on their activities and movement, including the closure of schools. The Taliban have dismantled the ministry of women’s affairs and the Independent Human Rights Commission, thus wiping out systems that tracked and helped women dealing with domestic violence, including the shelter system.
