A man killed his wife and then detonated her body with a mine in the Siagird district of Parwan province, residents tell Zan Times.

“This man’s name is Khawja Mohammad and he is an employee of a demining company,” explains a resident to Zan Times. “He first killed his wife with a knife and then took her body to the valley and detonated her body by tying a mine to her stomach.” This and another resident say the murder took place on Wednesday, October 26 in Qaiddkhana village of the district.

The woman was a 35-year-old mother of five children, says the other resident, who also asked not to be identified. A motive is not yet known.

Kamran Habibi, the spokesman of the Taliban police in Parwan, confirmed the murder of this woman to the media. He offered a more disturbing account of the crime, saying that Khawja Mohammad first injured his wife with a knife and then placed a mine on her stomach and detonated it. The Taliban said that this man stated in intitial interrogations that the reason for the murder was “family violence.”

Since the Taliban regained power, family violence has been increasing catastrophically. The Taliban has eliminated all legal, and institutional support for victims and survivors of domestic violence and dismantled the ministry of women’s affairs and the Independent Human Rights Commission, thus wiping out systems that tracked and helped women dealing with violence, including the shelter system.
