A 14-year-old girl died of suicide after her family forced her to marry, local sources in Badghis province tell Zan Times. This incident occurred last Thursday in Qadis district.
“She was forced to marry,” a relative of the teen tells Zan Times. “She did not want her husband, so she committed suicide on the night of her engagement.”
Mohammad Saleh Pardal, governor of Qadis district, says that the girl loved someone else. When her father forced her to marry her cousin, she ended her life by hanging herself. She was about 14-15 years old, according to Pardal.
Amnesty International’s research on the lives of women and girls, shows a surge in the rate of child, early and forced marriage under Taliban rule. “This increase is due to several interrelated drivers, many of which are attributable to the actions and policies of the Taliban and its members since they seized control,” explained the research, which was published in July.
The research also highlights that, in addition to the economic and humanitarian crisis and lack of educational and work opportunities for women and girls, families fear of the Taliban and their need to protect their daughters as another common driver of rise in forced, child, and early marriage.
