On Tuesday, a young girl was killed by her brother in Maimana city, the capital of northern Faryab province.
“The body of a 22-year-old woman, with two bullet wounds, one on her head and one on her chest, was brought to the emergency department of the hospital,” a source from Faryab provincial hospital told Zan Times.
Hamidullah Mubariz, the spokesman of the Taliban police in Faryab province, confirmed the incident and announced that her brother was arrested hours after the murder and has been charged with the crime.
Although there is not much information about the woman and what allegedly motivated her brother to murder her, an anonymous Taliban source says that the motive is a romantic relationship between the young woman and a man.
Since taking over the country in August 2021, the Taliban have dismantled all systems of support for victims of domestic violence.
Even before the Taliban took power, Afghanistan was one of the worst places for women, “with 9 out of 10 women experiencing at least one form of intimate partner violence in their lifetime,” according to the UN.
