A member of the Taliban who was planning to marry a second time was fatally injured during an argument with his first wife, says a resident of Badghis province.
The resident, who spoke to Zan Times on the condition of anonymity, says that the incident happened 10 days ago in Zimat village of Ab Kamari district of the western province.
“The person’s name was Mohammad Idris and he was a Taliban soldier. When he told his wife that he wanted to marry again, she took his gun and tried to commit suicide,” said the resident. “When Mohammad Idris was trying to stop his wife, the gun went off and struck Mohammad Idris in the abdomen.”
Mohmmad Idris’s relatives first took him to Badghis provincial hospital and then to a hospital in Herat. Mohammad Idris died after being hospitalized for a week and his body was buried in Zimat village on Friday, according to the source. He also said that Taliban arrested Muhammad Idris’s wife on charges of murder after the burial.
The Taliban police in Badghis confirmed this incident in a statement, but only mentioned Mohammad Idris’s injury. The Taliban statement does not mention his membership to the Taliban or the arrest of his wife.
Since the Taliban regained power, suicide attempts, domestic violence, and forced marriages have dramatically increased. A new Amnesty International report released in July, documented the Taliban’s violation of women’s and girls’ rights to work, education, and free movement. It states that the Taliban “decimated the system of protection and support for those fleeing domestic violence; detained women and girls for minor violations of discriminatory rules; and contributed to a surge in the rates of child, early and forced marriage in Afghanistan.”
