There is a mobile internet blackout in Kabul from morning till evening on Monday, according to residents.
This has coincided with Ashura, a major Shia Muslim commemoration of the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Ahmad Murtazawi, a resident of Kabul, told Zan Times in a phone call that all mobile internet access has been switched off from 7 a.m. on Monday till evening.
He adds that telecommunication companies did not provide any notification of the internet disruption ahead.
Mohammad, a resident of Shahr Naw district in Kabul, confirms the situation, saying that only fixed-line internet was available.
Such an internet disruption during a bad security situation created panic for people who are disconnected from their loved ones, as the internet calls are the primary method of communication for many residents. Many people in Kabul rushed to internet cafes, where fixed-line internet is available, to reassure their acquaintances and relatives abroad of their wellbeing.
Neither the telecommunication companies nor Taliban officials have provided an explanation about this matter.
